Things, it would seem, are on the up. Anecodatal evidence would suggest that there is an upturn in the economy again and a symbol of this could be the presence of a new auctioneer’s office opened in the Market Square in Portlaoise in recent weeks.
Castlecomer man Tommy Buggy has opened for business under the Property Partners banner, a new career step for a man well known in Laois.
Buggy only retired as a prison officer earlier this year, having spent most of his working days up to now in Portlaoise.
He’s also very well-known in sporting circles, having managed a number of hurling teams in his native Kilkenny, as well as Borris-Kilcotton and Clough-Ballacolla here in Laois, guiding both to finals – albeit losing ones. He recently stepped down as the Ballacolla boss to focus solely on his new business.
It won’t be entirely new to him. His brother John owns the Property Partners in Kilkenny and he has spent the last couple of years getting the required qualificitations through his studies in Limerick. Another brother, David, owns the Kia dealership in Kilkenny.
He’s set up base in Market Square, in a premises that was O’Donovan’s shop for many years and he has a couple of properties on the books already.
It’s a different role to the one he spent many years in in the Irish Prison Service. But you get the sense, he’s never shied away from a challenge.
An exciting future lies ahead.
