Funding sought for Laois river amenity

The Erkina river

Funding is to be sought to complete repair work at the Woodenbridge amenity area at the River Erkina.

Councillor Seamus McDonald had a motion before the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District meeting seeking funding from Laois County Council “for the reinstatement of the railings and replace the wall at the Woodenbridge and to widen the road at this point for parking spaces for all the people who use the river Erkina as an amenity area”.

Council engineer Paul McLoughlin said the council will examine the extent of the works required to reinstate the railings and repair the wall.

They will then apply for funding.

“The council is aware of draft proposals from community groups to further develop the amenities available on the Erkina and planned future walkway extension,” Mr McLoughlin said.

He said the council will continue to work with “the stakeholders concerned, as their project applications are developed”.,

Great work has been done there, Cllr McDonald said.

“They need more room for car parks,” he added.

The municipal district cathaoirleach Cllr John King agreed that great work is being done.

“Anything that can be done for safety is welcome,” he said.
