The wait to get repair jobs done on council houses in Laois has been labelled “embarrassing”.
Cllr Paddy Bracken, who is chairman of the housing special policy committee (SPC) raised the issue of the delays at the recent monthly meeting of Laois County Council.
“It is very embarrassing as the chair of the the housing SPC to be fighting with the maintenance staff to get a little bit of maintenance work done,” he said.
“It’s embarrassing. There are tenants out there with housing issues which wouldn’t be allowed in the private rental sector,” he said.
Inspections
During a discussion on the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) scheme, it was confirmed that recent inspections found no significant issues with the standard of houses under this scheme.
The meeting heard that a total of 126 inspections have been carried out on Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) accommodation in Laois.
However, there were some concerns raised the resources are being spread thin as a clerk of works from the council is carrying out these inspections.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald said they needed extra staff, not a reduction.
