The snow and ice has forced one Portlaoise school to announce that it will be closed tomorrow.
St Francis school say that, due to the forecast weather and road conditions, it will close because of the school’s extensive catchment area.
Scoil Mhuire in Abbeyleix and both of Camross’ primary schools, Camross NS and Killanure NS, are also closed.
However, at present we believe all other schools are open.
But we understand that the situation will be monitored overnight.
Colaiste Iosagáin in Portarlington have tweeted to say: “See you all for school as normal tomorrow. Safe travelling on those roads. Mind yourselves.”
Meanwhile, the Laois Offaly ETB schools and centres will also be open tomorrow.
The Laois Offaly ETB is patron to the following secondary schools: Clonaslee College,Dunamase College Coláiste Dhún Másc, Portlaoise, and Portlaoise College, St Fergal’s College, Rathdowney.
While Portlaoise CBS also informed parents that they intend to open.
They said: “School will be open as usual tomorrow morning. Please take care on your journey.”
The Laois Weather Facebook page says that temperatures may drop as low as minus 9 tonight.
They say: “Tonight under clearing skies, temperatures will plummet with lows of -9c forecast for central and southwestern parts of Laois, possibly lower locally.
“Lying snow and slush will freeze hard and present very difficult travelling conditions, especially where pavements are untreated.”
