Timahoe NS student Luke Devitt woke up to a lovely surprise yesterday morning – a letter from President Michael D Higgins.
The gold embossed envelope contained a letter, a photo of the President and a leather bookmark.
It was President Michael D Higgins’ way of thanking 11-year-old Luke for the Christmas pudding he sent him.
“The President very much appreciated your thoughtfulness and sends his good wishes”, states the letter.
Luke who lives in Coolnabacca, just outside Timahoe said: “I made a pudding for the President to thank him for all the work he does.
“My mam (Imelda Devitt of Tynan’s at the Storeyard) helped me, especially with the measurements. It’s always important to get that right.
“Baking is one of my favourite pastimes” he said. “That is of course after Gaelic football” he quipped.
Luke is a star forward with the Timahoe U12s.
Timahoe NS has built up quite the connection with the Áras and President Higgins.
Students and staff were invited to the Áras to meet with President Higgins last year on foot of the school’s back to back wins in the Intel Mini Scientist All-Ireland Finals.
Six months later they were delighted to meet the President in Abbeyleix to share with him the details of their project based on Abbeyleix Bog which is one of only 100 primary school projects to have qualified for this year’s Young Scientist Primary Science Fair at the RDS Dublin.
