The young students of Portlaoise Educate Together showed their opposition to a potential downgrade of Midlands Regional Hospital with their very own march, which had a government minister in attendance.
Once the event was organised, Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan was invited to attend by the school.
He witnessed first hand the young pupils’ opposition to the proposed downgrade of the hospital which will have direct consequences for the young students and their families.
In all, around 400 people took part, including students, teachers and school staff.
The event came about when students from 2nd class in the school were learning about events that affect them, particularly the proposed downgrade of the hospital.
The young students felt so strongly about the issue that they wanted to get involved in the protest.

They made banners to get the message across.
The organisers behind the event said the pupils are now very aware of the situation and they, along with their parents, plan to take part in the monster rally planned in Portlaoise tomorrow (Saturday) evening.
