The students of Scoil Chriost Ri in Portlaoise carried out a mock sleepout in school on Friday to raise awareness about the homeless situation in Ireland and what they can do to help.
As part of their work to raise awareness and receive donations that they will give to the PATH (Portlaoise Action to Homeless) group, they are carrying out different fundraisers such as a collection of supplies, a bake sale and a mock sleep out.
The mock sleepout is to replicate the way the homeless have to spend their nights.
While chatting to LaoisToday the students highlighted how this awareness has changed their own perspective.
“Now that we have taken the time to understand how big the issue of homelessness in our country is at the moment, to show everyone who has the privilege of a warm sheltered house just what these people are going through” said Grace Tyrell, one of the students who took part.
Their teacher Tom Moss spoke about how this is the first year they have taken on this project for junior cert students.
He said: “They are a great bunch of girls, they have all put in a lot of commitment of time and energy. And they are great example for students following.”
