Nowhere to bury the dead in Clonaslee

There are fears that family members won’t be able to bury their loved ones in the cemetery in Clonaslee.

“Plots are not being allocated,” Cllr David Goodwin told the Borris-in-Ossory/Mountmellick Municipal District meeting today (Thursday).

“It’s not being managed,” he explained after the meeting.

The new cemetery is about half an acre in size.

“When someone dies in Clonaslee, they haven’t got a plot,” Cllr Goodwin said.

“There are no plots in Clonaslee according to the undertaker. There is nowhere to bury people,” he said.

The new cemetery is open a while but the issue has been ongoing for 2 – 3 years, he said.

Shake

“Someone needs to give someone a shake,” he said.

A commitment is needed to resolve the issue as soon as possible, Cllr Goodwin said.

Director of services Donal Brennan said the matter will be looked into.

“If someone dies, can they be buried?” cathaoirleach Cllr James King asked.

“The council will never see somebody short,” Mr Brennan replied

If a footpath is required at the graveyard, they will look at it, he added.
