The Clonaslee St Manman’s footballers may be out of the championship but that didn’t stop them turning out in great numbers on Sunday afternoon for a fundraising game against a ladies team from the club that are just getting going.
For the fun of it, the men decided to wear wellies in the match. And given the rain that fell and that the Clonaslee Show was called off altogether because of the predicted poor weather, it led to a few fairly predictable incidents of slipping, sliding and falling on their respective arses.
With many of their top stars playing – including the likes of Ger ‘Buster’ Dunne, John Rigney, Seamus Rosney and Conor Gorman – the game was a fundraiser for the ladies and it was obviously great craic too.
Video footage sent to us by Laura Hogan captured one of the many moments where the men found the going fairly soft. And it’s always funny when someone lands so ungracefully as two Clonaslee players did in quick succession here.
“After a very entertaining match and some very dubious play by the “gentleman” which was well reffed and spotted by Gavin Burke the Clonaslee ladies defeated the Clonaslee St Manmans football team on a scoreline of 3-17 to 1-12. Well done ladies,” the club posted on Facebook.
The game was due to be part of the Clonaslee Show weekend but the popular agricultural show was called off because of the weather.
And the show organisers have confirmed that it won’t be rescheduled due to the difficulty in finding a suitable date.
“Unfortunately due to inclement weather conditions, and resulting underground conditions we felt on Health and Safety grounds that it is best to cancel the Show for this year,” said the organisers in a statement.
“Sincerest apologies for any inconvenience caused.”
This year’s show was due to be the 66th hosting of the popular agricultural show that is held in the Clonaslee Community Grounds.
