Can you believe it’s here?!
Well it is, and the excitement in the LaoisToday offices is through the roof!
We’re no music experts and certainly don’t profess to be.
But we’ve sought council for other quarters and are bringing you six acts we think are worthy of seeing today:
Little Hours
Main Stage – 5pm
The Donegal duo who have really broke through in the last year are the first act to perform on the main stage for the weekend.
They kick-off at 5pm and it will be the band’s debut performance at the festival.
Their songs “Water” and “It’s Still Love” have received great acclaim and the latter was nominated for the Meteor Choice Awards Song of the Year in 2016.
The Divine Comedy
Main Stage – 7.30pm
This orchestral pop band are from Northern Ireland are on the go since the late 1980s and have some top hits such as “The National Express”.
They have done several soundtracks for movies and shows but are great live band with a quirky side to their music.
If you like madness they will certainly delivery and you can see them at the Main Stage at 7.30pm.
The RTE Concert Orchestra with DJ Jenny Green and DJ Mo K
Rankin Woods – 8pm and 9pm
An unmissable act, last year probably one of the most atmospheric performances at the whole festival and they are back and even better we hear.
At 8pm DJ Jenny Greene will be on the Rankin Woods stage joining The RTE Concert Orchestra.
And at 9pm DJ Mo K will take over with the Orchestra. Both performances include some of the greatest dance classics of all time such as “Insomnia” and “Everybody’s Free” as well as the latest hits.
Saint Sister
Other Voices – 11.25pm
An Irish two-woman band from Derry, they performed at festivals as big as Glastonbury but are perhaps not the biggest name on the list.
They have mixture of Irish trad combined with Indie and in the small, quaint setting of the Other Voices stage at 11.25pm then this could turn out be a magical and intimate performance of the night.
The XX
Main Stage – 10.30pm
A formed in the mid-2000s from England, have some big hits such as “Intro” and “On Hold”.
They are listed as one of the headline acts for the festival and recently released a new album.
Although they wouldn’t be a huge name in Ireland they have a good reputation for live performance and you can catch them on main stage at 10.30pm.
London Grammar
Main Stage 9pm
Another English based band, they have performed at the Picnic before back in 2014 on the Electric Arena stage but this year they make the step up to the Main Stage at 9pm.
They are described as an Indie-pop band with some songs being very slow and intense. Songs such as “Strong” and “Hey Now” were big hits when they were released and they are set to be a great act.
There are plenty of other amazing acts which will be performing through the day and also it is worth keeping an eye out for some of the comedy acts and visual art performances.
We will be previewing acts for Saturday tomorrow and Sunday’s top performances will be the following day.
