Gardai have seized cash amounting to approximately €1.2m following a search of a car in Carlow on Friday evening.
As part of Operation Thor, Gardaí carried out a number of checkpoints in Carlow yesterday, August 25.
Shortly before 8pm they stopped a car at Ballyvergal, Carlow, being driven by a man in his 50s.
During the course of a search, Gardaí discovered a large quantity of cash, amounting to approximately €1.2 million. A man was arrested on suspicion of committing an offence under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering & Terrorist Financing) Act, 2010.
Independent.ie are reporting that it was a random checkpoint rather than a targeted operation. They are saying that Gardai had no prior knowledge or intelligence that the man was travelling with a sum of cash like this.
A senior Garda source told Independent.ie that, “this was an incredible find because it was so random and unexpected”. “It is a significant blow against money laundering.”
He is currently detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, as amended at Carlow Garda Station.
Investigations are ongoing.
