Motorists have been advised to avoid the Abbeyleix – Ballacolla road after a lorry left the road and ended up in a ditch.
It is understood there were no injuries to the driver of the lorry, which is currently stuck at the roadside and causing an obstruction.
It occurred at the Abbeyleix side of the Gully river on a busy stetch of road.
The road will remain closed until early afternoon.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident which occurred earlier today.
A garda spokesperson said disruption will be kept to a minimum but heavy equipment will be required to remove the lorry.
Gardai are currently on the scene and dealing with the incident.
The road is expected to be closed until after 2 pm this afternoon.
Gardai have advised motorists to divert towards Durrow, and avoid the area.
