It’s always been good but this year Durrow is gearing up for its best ever Scarecrow Festival.
This morning the organisers and entrants are putting the finishing touches to their creations for the event which runs from this afternoon, Sunday July 30 right through to the bank holiday Monday, August 7.
It’s hats off to the festival committee – straw hats of course – as this year they really have exceled themselves with a blockbuster week of scarecrow antics and fun in store.
There is a Big Screen vibe to this year’s festival with a strong movie theme running through many of the stunning made-of-straw but lifelike installations.
Visitors and families are in for a massive treat in King Kong who dominates the skyline and the village green. He is joined by so many familiar creatures on Fairytale Lane with Sleeping Beauty sure to steal the show, while just around the corner is Harry Potter and his ‘owl’ friends from Hogworts.
Also playing a starring role are Willy Wonka, the Oompa Loompas and cast from the Chocolate Factory.
And we have to tip our hats – straw hats again of course – to the crew of the Midlands Prison who have recreated the 1963 Steve Mc Queen classic, The Great Escape with some panache.
And indeed the Scarecrow Festival itself is a great escape this summer for children of all ages as there is so much more in store with exhibitions, stalls, competitions, crafts, exhibitions, children’s summer camp – and a free concert today from 3pm with bluegrass and hoedown favourites, Woodbine.
So it’s not just the yellow brick road, but all roads lead to Durrow for this summer’s blockbuster Scarecrow Festival.
