Gardai are appealing for information after a 28-year-old man was assaulted with a hurley overnight in Portlaoise.
The man was walking back to the Forest Park estate on the Borris Road at about 2am when he was approached by a man at the bottom of Tower Hill. The man was asked for his phone and wallet but refused to give them and was then followed as he walked away in the direction of the Portlaoise Leisure Centre.
A second man, who was carrying a hurley, then approached the injured party at the roundabout at the junction of the Ridge Road and Tower Hill. He was again asked for his phone and wallet and as he attempted to run away towards the Leisure Centre he was tripped and received a number of blows to the lower body with the hurley.
The injured party reported the incident to the Gardai and described the two males as being in their early 20s and with Portlaoise accents. He described the first man as being about 5ft 10, wearing a white hoodie with the strings pulled tightly covering his face. He described the second male as being of slim build and shorter height.
The culprits were last seen running towards St Brigid’s Place. Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have been passing that area at the time to contact them in Portlaoise Garda Station or email laoisoffaly.crimeprevention@garda.ie.
