A hotel in Castlecomer is to have a €5.4m investment which will transform it into a wedding venue, complete with ballroom.
Kilkenny-based Joe and Julie Comerford are pumping funds into the site in Castlecomer after being granted planning permission from An Bord Pleanala.
The existing small bed and breakfast Avalon House Hotel will be upgraded to a 39-bedroom hotel on completion.
Scaffolding has been already been erected and construction has begun on the hotel.
A ballroom catering for up to 250 people is also under construction at the venue.
It is expected that the development will create between 30 and 40 new jobs, both temporary and full-time, which will be a significant boost for the area.
The project manager for the hotel is another local man, Seamus Brennan, who also acts as operations manager at the Comerford’s 307 bedroom hotel in Dublin, The Academy Plaza off O’Connell Street.
The hotel – which will also be known as the Avalon House Hotel – will open in the middle of next year.
According to Brian Dunlop Architects, the new extension is a contemporary design to juxtapose with the refurbishment of the historic building and the materials range from standing seam zinc to cut stone and structural glazing.
The extension, when constructed, will sit within a landscaped courtyard.
