A Sat Nav error is causing motorists in Laois to take an unnecessary detour, a Municipal District meeting has heard.
Cllr James Kelly has requested that the Council install a direction sign for the M7 motorway on the R434 Ballacolla to Borris-in-Ossory road just before the L612 Mannin Cross Junction to Knockaroo.
Speaking yesterday, Cllr Kelly said: “The history on this is that motorists are actually taking a 7km detour because of an error on Sat Nav when they are trying to get onto the M7.
“So basically, when they get to Mannin Cross on the Ballacolla road, it is telling them to go left towards the GAA field, up to the church, take a right then to go through about 30 houses and end up at Glennon’s Pub before getting on the motorway.
“So it is dangerous enough because even on that road at the moment, you won’t get two cars going past one another because it is narrow.
“It is a 7km detour and it is dangerous so that’s why we want a sign put up.”
Cllr Brendan Phelan asked if contact could be made with ‘the eye in the sky’ to rectify the Sat Nav problem.
He said: “I wonder would it be a big job to make contact with the eye in the sky that looks after the Sat Nav?”
He was told that it probably would be.
Engineer Edmond Kenny said: “Laois County Council will examine the requirement for additional signage for the M7 on this route at the location identified.”
