Discount store Aldi has been granted planning permission for an extension to its store in Portarlington.
The planning permission was granted by Laois County Council in recent days.
The development will consist of an extension of the existing single storey discount foodstore, including off-licence use, by 264 sq metres on the western elevation and minor extension on the northern elevation by 22 sq metres to provide an ancillary meeting room.
The gross floor area of the store will increase from 1, 460 sq metres of to 1746 sq metres.
The proposed development includes a new canopy to replace the existing one, a new store entrance arrangement, a new illuminated double board poster sign towards the entrance lobby.
There will also be minor changes to the car parking spaces from 94 to 100 as well as landscaping on the 0.89 hectare site.
In his submission as part of Aldi’s planning application, Aldi MD John Spain said the development “will enhance the amenity of the store whilst being part of Aldi’s national investment and improvement of their stores”.
“The proposed development is entirely consistent with the Portarlington Joint Local Area Plan, Laois County Development Plan and is in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area,” he added.
