Summer roadworks are on the way for lower Main Street in Portlaoise.
Major roadworks are to be carried out on Lower Main Street in Portlaoise by ESB in the coming weeks.
Today’s meeting of Portlaoise Municipal Authority heard the roadworks will last between four and six weeks,
The work will start at the old Shaws building, continue onto lower main street, turning at the Leinster Express offices and then down to the roundabout at James Fintan Lalor Avenue.
Councillors were told that works should be complete before schools return in September.
Director of services Kieran Keogh said it is a big scale of works. “It is a vital link for the ESB,” he said.
Laois County Council has received an application for a road opening licence from the Leinster Express office to James Fintan Lalor Avenue.
Cllr Mary Sweeney had a motion before the meeting seeking the replacement of footpaths along this stretch of road.
Confirming the works, engineer Wes Wilkinson said: “It is intended that this section of footpath will be replaced as part of these works”.
Cllr Willie Aird hoped the work won’t begin in December.
“It will be carried out during the school holidays,” Mr Wilkinson confirmed, and will begin in the next few weeks.
