One of our favourite programmes on RTE is Reeling in the Years.
There’s something great about watching old footage and remembering incidents from a different era. Well, we’re after coming across a popular RTE programme from the 1980s that focussed on Abbeyleix and Ballyroan.
‘Out and About’ was presented by Thelma Mansfield, Liam O Murchu and Ingrid Miley and visited a different area in the country every week showcasing some of the local groups and events.
On this particular show, just before the June Bank Holiday weekend in 1987, they visited Abbeyleix and Ballyroan and the charming footage is sure to bring memories flooding back to people from both areas.
Carmel Casserly from a local employment scheme, Paddy Mulhall in Morrissey’s Pub, Paddy O’Hanlon, John Bland and Timmy Sullivan, who were involved in the Abbeyleix Horse Show, and John Bonham from the Ballyroan Brass Band were those to be interviewed on the programme – while many more faces can be spotted throughout the broadcast.
