Man arrested after car hi-jacking in Portarlington

Garda

A man in his 30s was arrested after hi-jacking a car and threatening a local woman with a screwdriver at Lidl in Portarlington last week.

A woman in her 60s had got into her car outside the store at 4pm on Monday, May 15, when a man forced his way in, threatened her with a screwdriver and demanded cash, which she handed over, and the vehicle.

He then drove off at speed in the vehicle, leaving her behind.

The car was later recovered on the Lea Road only a short distance away. The woman suffered no physical injuries during the ordeal.

The man, who is well known to Gardai, lives in Portarlington but is not originally from the area. He was arrested that night and brought to Naas Garda Station where he was detained for a couple of days under the Criminal Justice Act 1994.

He has since been charged in relation to a previous similar incident in Kilcock and remanded in custody. A file has been sent to the DPP in relation to the offence in Portarlington.
