Nothing can drum up a conversation starter quiet like this – how much are you willing to pay for a bottle?
I’m sure some of you have said or have heard “I wouldn’t pay that for a bottle” or “you can get 3 for €10 over in Aldi” or “wine is wine”.
To put this into context it isn’t just the wine you have to consider when calculating the cost of a bottle of wine, there is packaging and distribution, shipping costs, salaries of the winemaker, vineyard workers etc plus the wholesaler and retailer.
In some cases as little as 50 cent is on the wine in a €10 bottle – diagram attached below is from Irish Wine Association. I think it makes for very interesting discussion. Things are also going to change if minimum pricing comes in but that’s for another day.
Maybe I am biased but I firmly believe you get what you pay for when it comes to food and wine. I’d rather pay a euro or two more and get a decent bottle of wine. Quality over quantity.
Every Friday and Saturday in Brown’s Vineyard, there is a “Wine of the Week”. I open a different wine every week. Some are in the value range (€10) and some are premium wines.
It is a FREE way of getting to taste different wines without having to buy the bottle and you can will quickly find out the styles of wine you like and grape varieties.
Until next time. Happy Tasting.
