It was another busy week in LaoisToday and once again we have really enjoyed bringing you all the important news stories.
From serious news, to local sport or something that sparks a conversation or debate, we like to think we can offer something for everyone.
There were so many stories over the past week, but here is just a selection of the items featured on our website in the past week.
News
- There was double Lottery success this week when it emerged that a local grandmother bagged €250,000 in Abbeyleix. This followed a €500,000 win in the Euro Millions Lottery for a customer who purchased a €3.50 quick pick line at the Gandon Inn filling station.
- An armed robbery was bravely foiled by staff member in an off-licence in Portlaoise. The staff member of Egan’s off-licence required surgery aftwards but was praised for his actions.
- A cost of 20,000 to have the old petrol pumps removed from the Market Square prompted some discussion. Some people are in favour of them being retained as a nod to the town’s past.
Sport
- Many players have shown amazing commitment to their clubs. We had a look at those still pulling on the jersey in their forties.
- There was much pride in Laois at Grand National Success for Our Duke. The favourite justified his tag, cheered on by two busloads of supporters from Coolrain.
- In hurling, focus switched to the senior clash with Westmeath on Sunday. The team picked showed a number of changes from the relegation play-off victory over Kerry.

- Mark Doheny’s: 17 lessons from playing hurling in Laois certainly provoked a response. He reckons the life lessons from hurling in Laois are as good an education as you can get.
- Former garda Ray Croke has a fascinating story to tell. The retired garda is now the author of a thriller.
