The Army Bomb Disposal Unit were in Portlaoise this afternoon following the discovery of a suspect package at the international mailing centre.
The An Post facility deals with in-bound packages destined for Irish addresses are sorted before delivery.
At this early stage, it is unclear whether the package is a threat, badly wrapped or an elaborate hoax.
An spokesperson for An Post confirmed to LaoisToday that an incident had occurred and the whole centre had been evacuated.
The spokesperson said: “We were informed of an incident in Portlaoise around noon today.
“The Army Bomb Disposal Unit were called and the centre was evacuated entirely to follow procedure.
“This is the busiest mailing centre in the country and while it is at its busiest overnight, it is going all day long.”
An Army spokesman confirmed to us that an OED team had been requested but had no further details.
A source also told the Sunday World that the device appeared to contain military ordnance along with electronic devices mailed from the United States.
