The popular ’25’ is known as the card game of rural Ireland and there’s a man in Vicarstown who has probably played as many hands as anyone in the country.
Last week, the local group that play every Sunday night during the winter months helped him celebrate his 88th birthday in style.
Martin Scully is somewhat of a legend in the Courtwood-Vicarstown area. Known to one and all as ‘Unc’, his reputation as a serious card player goes before him and he’s out most nights of the week playing in one venue or the other, most of the time making his way home and back on his trusty 1979 tractor.
Last Sunday night his fellow players surprised him with a small party to mark his 88th birthday. The cake went down well with all concerned but, most importantly, it didn’t delay the actual card playing.
And age is showing no sign of having an impact on Martin’s playing ability. He’s in the leading group for the overall cumulative prize will stop at nothing to take home the main honours!
The weekly card drive, which is in aid of Annanough GAA, takes place at 8pm every Sunday night and new members are always welcome. Entry is €10 and refreshments are served at the midway point.
