Over 100 people turned up to the Antiques Roadshow event in Vicarstown at the weekend with all types of antique items brought for valuation.
“I think it was very, very succesful,” said Philip Sheppard of Sheppards Auctions. “A lot of people brought in a lot of different things”.
“We were there from 2 to 5.30 pm. I don’t know how many people came but there were certainly over a hundred,” he said.
He said people were very patient as they waited for their items to be valued. He added that there was a great atmosphere in the venue.
The event was held in the Old Community Centre in Vicarstown School on Sunday afternoon to raise funds for the shool restoration fund.
The items brought in varied greatly, with a medal from an expedition to Tibet in 1903 being one piece of particular note.
Another item of curisioty was an 18th Century chimney piece from a house in Dublin. It was made up of panels and also had a centrepiece. “It is valuable and also important,” Mr Sheppard explained.
Another item which was of interest was an album of 19th century typographical photographs.
Mr Sheppard said items can have significant social history value even if they do not have a large monetary value. He said often people want to be filled in the history or background of an item.
A number of medals from various campaigns from both World Wars were brought also brought in for valuation.
“I think most people are just carious to now about a piece that has been part of their lives growing up,” he said.
The event also keeps the valuers on their toes and Mr Sheppard said many of those coming in with items have already done significant research on their items. “Sometimes we can fill in the blanks,” he said.
